Why Lineage Matters: Training Under Master Carlos Machado

There are a lot of Jiu-Jitsu schools. They are not all the same, and lineage is a big part of why.

Safeguard is a Carlos Machado BJJ affiliate. Master Carlos Machado is an 8th degree Coral belt, one of the original brothers who brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the United States in the early 1990s, a cousin and training partner of the Gracie family, and one of the most respected teachers in the art.

What does that mean for you? It means the curriculum Coach Elias teaches has a direct line back to the source. The techniques are pressure-tested, the fundamentals are prioritized, and the standards for promotion are set by someone who has spent decades on the mat.

It also means Coach Elias — a brown belt under Master Carlos Machado — trains regularly with his coaches. Your instructor is not the end of the line. He's still learning, still being coached, still held to a standard. That flows down to you.

Lineage isn't about bragging rights. It's about accountability. When Coach promotes a student to a new belt, that promotion carries weight because it has to answer to someone.

You can train Jiu-Jitsu anywhere. If you're going to invest the time, train somewhere the belt on your waist means what it says.
